TabWipe Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 15, 2026
100% Local & Private
TabWipe is a browser extension that automatically closes or suspends inactive tabs. It is designed to be 100% local and private.
Data Collection
TabWipe does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any user data. Period.
- No analytics or telemetry
- No tracking of any kind
- No user accounts
- No external servers — the extension never sends your data anywhere
Data Stored Locally
To do its job, TabWipe stores the following only inside your browser, using Chrome's built-in extension storage:
- Your settings — cleanup interval, sweep mode, safety rules, and your list of protected domains (synced across your own Chrome profile via
chrome.storage.sync, a feature operated by your browser, not by TabWipe) - Tab activity timestamps — when each tab was last used, so inactive tabs can be identified
- Recently closed tab history — the URL and title of tabs TabWipe closed (capped at 100 entries), so you can restore them
This data never leaves your browser. Uninstalling the extension deletes it. You can also wipe it anytime via Advanced Settings → Reset Everything.
Permissions
| Permission | Why TabWipe needs it |
|---|---|
tabs | Query open tabs, detect inactivity, apply protection rules, close/suspend tabs, and restore them |
storage | Save your settings and closed-tab history locally |
alarms | Run the periodic background inactivity check |
notifications | Warn you before a sweep (with a "Keep" button) and confirm results |
Third-Party Requests
TabWipe loads no remote code. The only external network requests it makes are standard image fetches for website favicons (via Google's public favicon service) so tab history entries are recognizable. These requests contain only the site's domain name and are subject to Google's privacy policy.
Changes
If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be published at this same location with a revised date.
